It’s coming from the rivers of despair

From winds of the right that choke the air

From the bitterness of walls, a cacophony of calls

For pasts and futures never really there

From the anger and deception from the rust-belt of dismay

From the groping in the darkness to the agents gone astray

Democracy is drowning, in the USA

It’s coming from the glaciers and the leaks

From the twisted blaming of the weak

From the few who have so many and those who haven’t any

Of the comforts and the confidence they seek

From the turbulence of culture like a fire in the hay

From the ruthlessness of change and the hopes in disarray

Democracy is drowning, in the USA

It’s coming from the towers in the streets

From the fantasy of wisdom in the tweets

From the flooded grave of health to the trickle down of wealth

To the ancient walls of justice in retreat

Blame it if you must on a message gone astray

That’s petty stuff to cling to when hope is blown away

Democracy is drowning, in the USA

Yet, the birds are still singing on the wire

While the cracked bells slip light upon the choir

There’s still the Hallelujah prayer and Suzanne’s touch and tea

And hey, that’s no way to say goodbye

So I’ll gather my blue raincoat on this thick and dark day

From the frontiers of my prison I will ring the dark away

Democracy is coming, to the USA.
