The Farmers Market made its semester debut Feb. 27 with vendors selling everything from elotes and aguas frescas to kettle corn and fresh fruit. This is the first Farmers Market on campus since the 2018 spring semester.

The market was put on hold due to staff transitions that the Associated Students Inc. (ASI) experienced this academic year.

“ASI began working with an external Farmers Market coordinator so that we could bring the market back this semester, “ said Marcus Rodriguez, Interim Executive Director for ASI.

Students were excited to have the market back on campus.

“It gives me more options and more variety for healthier food,” said Paola Aguilar, Public Health major.

Students lined up to buy products such as nuts and fresh produce.

“I like fresh ingredients,” said Amanda Acosta, a criminal justice major, who waited in line to buy her kettle corn.

For the majority of the vendors, this was their first time participating in the Cal State LA Farmers Market.

“It’s extremely exciting to show my wares and to meet fabulous people,” said Theresa Cristi, a vendor who sells pet-related merchandise.

With the next Farmers Market scheduled on March 13, Rodriguez hopes to continue to attract more students and vendors.

“It offers something unique to the campus landscape,” said Rodriguez. “One important goal is to move towards students being more involved in actually curating the Market and offering spaces for clubs to table and student artists to perform.”

Alongside its new goals for the Farmers Market, ASI plans to continue featuring an assortment of farm-fresh and artisan produce and products on campus.
