Funding, undocumented students, and outreach were the most common topics discussed at the Q&A for Associated Students, Incorporated (ASI) candidates. The candidates spoke to a room of students composed primarily of fellow ASI members.

Low student turnout has been a common issue at ASI events. However, according to Fritza Plasencia, an ASI representative for the College of Natural and Social Sciences, they are working to combat this by incentivizing participation and increasing awareness.

Presidential candidate for ASI, Prince Sasay, echoed a similar vision for student outreach.

“If they don’t know about ASI, I’ll bring ASI to them. We should have emails, posters, more events. We should have a publication and we should invite the community to involve themselves in what we do on campus,” said Sasay.

Other candidates took time to address their platforms and goals.

According to Christopher Koo, candidate for vice president of finance, club and staff pay would be the first to get funding.

“If we’re going to keep promoting ourselves as an important resource for clubs, then we should prioritize that more,” said Koo.

One of the primary goals for Joceline Rivera, a candidate for Vice President of External Affairs and Advancement candidate, involves providing equal opportunity employment for undocumented students.

“I talk to many students who don’t have a work permit; they’re not able to work, sadly not even on campus,” said Rivera. One of my goals is to work with administration to be able to give opportunities to those students that are struggling financially. Maybe they don’t have to drop out of Cal State LA if they were able to get a job here.”

ASI election voting will be held in person and online through GET today and tomorrow. A voting party will also be held in the University-Student Union (U-SU), and will offer free In n’ Out catering to voters.
