The Teamsters Local 2010 union at 22 California State Universities plan strike on Nov. 14 in opposition to unfair wages. The strike comes after the union failed to come to an agreement with the CSU on Oct. 31.
“By striking, we will demonstrate the strength of our solidarity, because our work makes the CSU work,” read a statement on the Teamster’s website.
The strike will require skilled trade workers, like plumbers, mechanics, electricians and more, to stop labor during regularly scheduled work hours on the day of the strike.
Picketing will begin at 5:30 a.m. near parking lot two on Campus Road and Circle Drive.
The CFA Instagram also announced an official strike date for four Cal States, including Cal State LA, if negotiations with the CSU fell through. The official strike date that was announced for Cal State LA is Dec. 4.
“It’s unfortunate that [Teamsters and CFA] feel they need to strike. I hope they come to an agreement before the strike. If it happens, it happens,” said Interim President Leroy M. Morishita.
“Educators on strike do not grade, answer work emails, or perform other faculty work. The withholding of labor includes all in-person and virtual work,” according to the CFA website.
When the strikes occur, it may impede on-campus activity and classes for students, but some are in support of it.
“I think it will help get their [Teamsters and California Faculty Association] voices heard,” said child development major Sandra Orozco.
CFA- LA Chapter President Anthony Ratchif said in a statement to the University Times, that an official statement will be released soon to the Cal State LA community.
