With the amount of dining options available on campus, students in a hurry between classes might have difficulty taking time to search for the best choice. Those with a more attentive eye might notice a new sign in the food court, portraying a mischievous little boy in a devil costume holding a pitchfork.
The Diablo Grill serves made-to-order meals and drinks to students and faculty with limited time between classes and work, according to University Auxiliary Services Food Service Director Daniel Keenan.
The grill offers many of the same items as the University Club, like burgers, sandwiches, salads, pizzas, sides, and entrees. Breakfast items like breakfast burritos, french toast, and chilaquiles are exclusive to Diablo Grill. Where it differs is in its functionality; the Diablo Grill is takeout only and features online ordering capabilities that can be accessed from your smartphone or computer, while the Club is a full-service, sit-down restaurant.
Originally called “The Spot To-Go,” Keenan said it was rebranded as the Diablo Grill to avoid confusion between The Spot and the University Club.
“The easiest way to eliminate that confusion was to give online ordering a proper name that didn’t refer to any other concepts,” Keenan said. “Plus the Diablo represented the kind of feeling I want people to have when they order French Toast for lunch. The Devil made them do that.”
He explained that the creation of accessible and quick online ordering was spawned out of necessity when the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing.
“We were getting a lot of good responses from people. People really liked the idea of getting the food that they used to be able to get in the Club … and take it to go,” Keenan said. “Convenience is absolutely the name of the game.”
The Diablo Grill not only shares counter space with The Spot, but it also shares a kitchen. Surprisingly, Keenan said, the shared kitchen runs smoothly.
“They’re kinda brother and sister, so to say,” Keenan said.
Diablo Grill is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and orders can be placed at diablogrill.square.site.
