Cal State LA has begun its fall semester for 2019 and to commemorate the start for new and returning students, the University is holding Welcome Week.

Running from Aug. 19 through 29, Cal State LA will hold events to encourage student involvement and generate community and school spirit.

VIP Day, hosted by the library,  kicks off the two-week event at the University Bookstore by offering discounts on Cal State LA merchandise, free snacks, coupons and giveaways. Students can use the event to get ahead of purchasing their books for the semester. The event will be held on Monday, Aug. 19 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Day two on Aug 20 features helpful information from the school and an opportunity to speak with the Department of Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies. An info booth will be located at the south end of the main walkway of the campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. where students can ask general questions regarding the campus. The Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies Welcome Back will be by the entrance of King Hall where students can learn about classes within the major.

Day three of the event will see the main walkway packed with organizations and Greek life. The City of Orgs event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will have student organizations and clubs available to students to discuss what they bring to campus and even recruit new members. From 4 to 7 p.m., Fraternity and Sorority Info Night will take the University Student Union (U-SU) Plaza where students can find out about the different houses and how to join.

To conclude the first week of the event on Thursday Aug 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students can visit the main walkway again to attend the Golden Eagle Village and familiarize themselves with programs and services offered the university’s departments.

Week two begins on Monday Aug. 26 with Open House Day One. Associated Student, Inc. (ASI) will be hosting an event to learn about the campus’s student government works and what they offer students at Cal State LA. The event will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the U-SU, second floor at room 203.

The Office for Students with Disabilities will be open to allow students to meet the staff and learn more information. The Student Health Center will also be presenting, giving students tips on how to stay healthy throughout the semester. Project Rebound will take place in King Hall room D317 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. where students can learn about the school’s program of taking a once incarcerated individual to college success.

Open House Day Two will happen on Tuesday Aug. 27, with even more going on such as the Alumni Relations and Annual Giving where students can learn about scholarships and mentoring programs.

Another entity on campus, the Cross Cultural Center will be hosting a Homecoming event where they will have students learn their offices and what they offer to students. The Office of The Dean of Students will be meeting students at Student Affairs, room 115A,  where they will be discussing resources and engagement opportunities that they provide.

The Glazer Family Dreamers Resource Center, the Veterans Resource Center, the Center for Student Involvement and the Educational Opportunity Program will also all be available throughout the day.

The day will conclude with this year’s Movie in the Plaza “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Friends and family are welcome to attend with lawn chairs, pillows and blankets. Snacks will be provided and will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in the U-SU Plaza.

Wednesday Aug. 28 will allow students to take a break for the Golden Eagle Well-Being Lounge in the Mural Grass Area by the Physical Education building. Healthy snacks, games and meditation session will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To conclude Welcome Week, on Thursday Aug. 29, the U-SU Anniversary Celebration will take place at the U-SU plaza to honor the building’s 45th anniversary. Live music from Top Shelf Brass Band, free food and giveaways will take place from 5 to 8 p.m.
