A surprise matchup that not many expected at the beginning of the 2025-26 NFL Season. The New England Patriots are facing off against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60. Entering the season, both teams had very long odds to gain the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The Patriots had 80-1 odds, only the 24th best odds of all 32 teams, while the Seahawks had the 20th best odds, at 60-1 in most betting markets.
Neither team was expected to make the playoffs, as the Seahawks had taken a gamble with journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold, who came off a disappointing wild-card loss after such a hard-fought season with the Vikings, where he showed slight signs of improvement. Meanwhile, the Patriots were continuing their ongoing rebuild after enduring their third straight losing season, having only won four games, yet ending up with the third pick in the NFL draft.
The Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos in a tight defensive battle, with a low score of 10-7. The Patriots have faced plenty of judgment from football fans as they were given one of the easiest schedules this season, which propelled them to the second seed and their first AFC East divisional title since 2019. They have been led to their first Super Bowl appearance in seven years by second-year quarterback Drake Maye and former Patriots player, now head coach, Mike Vrabel, turning the tables after five seasons of underwhelming performances. Maye, who is an MVP contender, will be vying for the opportunity to become the youngest quarterback to win the Super Bowl. If the Patriots were to win, they would become the team with the most Super Bowl victories at seven, surpassing the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In Seattle, the Seahawks managed to scrape past the Los Angeles Rams in a competitive, hard-fought game to decide the representative for the NFC in the Super Bowl. The Seahawks, who, just like the Patriots, missed the playoffs last season, took the league by storm as they captured the NFC West title along with the first seed. Led by an explosive offense and strong defense reminiscent of the “Legion Of Boom” days from 2012 to 2015, when they were the most feared defense in the NFL. This defense is creating its own identity separate from the LOB, choosing to go by “The Dark Side.”
Seattle’s team will be seeking its second Super Bowl title in their fourth appearance, vying for revenge on New England for their defeat in Super Bowl 49. The Seahawks’ hope for victory falls in the hands of journeyman Sam Darnold, who has rejuvenated his career with a supporting cast of receivers, veteran Cooper Kupp, and breakout star Jackson Smith-Njigba. A gamble that truly paid off for the team with his outstanding season. Together, this group has created a high-octane offense that has proven to be a tough force to challenge.
Now, after 10 years, both teams face off again in a rematch from one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played. The Patriots are looking to complete a quick rebuild after five years, while the Seahawks are seeking redemption after many competitive teams came up short. Both teams will face off in Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. This is the second Super Bowl played in Santa Clara since Super Bowl 50, when the Denver Broncos defeated the 16-1 Carolina Panthers.
The Seahawks are heading into the matchup as the overwhelming favorites, causing the Patriots to be portrayed as the underdogs, a spot they have not filled since their first Super Bowl win 24 years ago. Despite being in this position, history has shown us that on any given Sunday, it can go either way. (Just ask the 2007 New York Giants, when they triumphed over the 17-0 New England Patriots, or the 1969 New York Jets when Joe Namath secured a victory over the favored Colts.)
With a week to prepare, both teams will await all the festivities to end, and have four quarters to decide who will take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the 60th Super Bowl.
